Lee and Jason’s Wedding at Glen Eyrie Castle

Please click the photo or follow the link to view our favorite photos from Lee and Jason’s wedding at Glen Eyrie Castle.

This was a fairytale dream wedding, and not only due to the fact it was at Glen Eyrie Castle, one of Colorado’s most inspiring locales. No, in fact, it was due to the fact that Lee and Jason are very chill people with very chill and cool families, and they held their reception before the wedding.

You read it right: they held their “reception” before Charlotte and I even arrived. Then everyone who was at the reception simply arrived at Glen Eyrie for the “getting-ready” and the ceremony. The bonus of this unique timeline is that it left more time for Charlotte and I to “play”.

I might be biased, but more time for your photographers to play and explore the gorgeous grounds with the couple can’t be a bad thing, right? I loved it.

Instead of rushing the couple off to a reception, we patiently played with the evening light and got some really great stuff.

Thank you Lee and Jason for trusting Char and I to capture your amazing wedding. It was a privilege and a pleasure.

You don’t need a lot to create a great image

Within the last 5 months or so, I made the decision to take a break from being the main photographer for our portrait business here at Trystan Photography, so that I could focus on my boudoir photography, LBoudoir, something I’ve always been incredibly passionate about.

I’ve still been taking some portraits this year… back home in Iowa for friends and family, long term clients, etc… and today while processing a photo for one of these sessions, I had an epiphany that I wanted to share.

I’ll be honest, the last couple of years have been tough, I started feeling a little drowned out by all of the amazing portrait photographers out there, and the level of competition there is when it comes to trying to keep up with the next coolest trend. Who has the newest funky piece of furniture to put a sleeping baby on, or what damask background looks the best with the 50 different fun hats you might have available for clients to choose from, or all the beautiful studio spaces photographers have out there, with exposed brick and natural light galore! It all gets very overwhelming to try and stay up to par with in this market. Don’t get me wrong, I do use some funky furniture and damask backgrounds for my boudoir portraits, but let’s be honest, that’s not what anyone is looking at when they look at this type of photography anyway, lol!

I decided that I needed to step back and hand over the reins to our very talented Kim Harms here at Trystan Photography. I needed a break to focus on the boudoir, and at this moment, I am very thankful that I have. While processing this photo (which I adore) that I shot of neighbors yesterday, I continue to realize … I just have a more simple style, and I am proud of that. I took this shot at my house, next to my boring French doors on the lower level of our split level suburban house. I threw some sheer curtains on the doors and the floor, had the family wear what they were most comfy in, and took the shot (I did tell them all to look at the baby though, lol). I really feel that less is more sometimes when it comes to capturing a beautiful image.  A huge influence I’ve had in leading me to this philosophy/style of photography, is owed to my dear friend and very talented photographer Mindy Myers. We once used a shower curtain as a softbox at an indoor photo shoot that I assisted her on, and it worked awesome, I’m telling you!!!!!!

I can’t even imagine how overwhelming it is to be a new photographer starting out in this business, and I just really wanted to share this little break through I had!

Now, I will get back to working on my boudoir stuff… which I haven’t blogged on for a month now. Did I mention I shoot weddings too…lol! Tis the season.

A Lovely Chief Hosa Lodge Wedding… in Winter

January 2010. You’d think a winter wedding in Colorado would be pretty darn cold…

Nope. Sunny, upper 50′s, and quite lovely actually. Katrina and Peter had the perfect day for a small intimate wedding at the Chief Hosa Lodge and Red Rocks.

We have joked with some of our Spring-time weddings (which have been bitter-cold and windy at times) that if they wanted nice weather for a wedding, they should have booked mid-winter.

What a crazy state Colorado is. Never the same and unpredictable, but always stunning to shoot photographs in.

January Newborns

I had some of the most precious newborns in the month of January! What a wonderful way to start off the new year. A couple of them were amazing sleepers, let me mold and pose them anyway I wanted… then a couple were a little more tough. Always sleeping with one eye open, watching me and refusing to sleep… luckily, with patience, a warm house and a full tummy they all finally succomed to their need for sleep and passed out! That’s when the real fun begins.

A lot of parents think they want their newborn to be awake for pictures… when in reality newborns photograph best when they are in that deep deep sleep where they can be moved without waking for a single second. Typically, if the baby is awake when I get there I’ll start the session and try to get a few shots of their bright eyes, but after a few of those I always recommend nursing/feeding the baby to top them off and get them to go to sleep. Sleepy newborns are much easier to work with than wide awake ones!

Missie Moosie Shoot

A couple of weeks ago Kim Harms and I had the opportunity to photograph the most adorable girls clothing, created by the very talented Alana Smith of Missie Moosie.  The really fun part was that we got to incorporate our daughters. Here is a little slide show of some of the shots we got. Aren’t the clothes absolutely the cutest little girls clothes ever?  The particular line that we shot was the Urban Angel line, lots of pink, Ella loved it!  And there are so many more fun, bright, trendy patterns to choose from. You must check out the website  http://missiemoosie.com/. If you love little girls clothes as much as I do, you will adore these clothes. Right now, through March 10th, Alana is offering my clients who book a session with me during this time, 10% off your entire Missie Moosie order! How fantastic?  Just let me know if you want to take advantage of this offer and I’ll give you the details!

KimKenna – 5 days new (Colorado Springs Newborn Photographer)

One of my best friends, Gaby, just delivered her third daughter, McKenna. She picked a great day to be born… my birthday! So McKenna’s daddy came up with the nickname of KimKenna…. since we will forever share the same birthday. I thought it was cleaver and pretty cute! Especially since I was there photographing her grand entrance into the world!

You’ll be seeing her on the blog as she grows through the first year, and I am so excited… she is just the cutest and most precious little girl. And look at all that hair! You’ve also seen her two older sisters on the blog before… so keep your eye out for their first session together!

Gaby made a great decision to have me photograph McKenna before she was even a week old. Newborns are the easiest to photograph in the first week of life… they hardly, if ever!, wake up… and let me mold them and move them whatever way I want. Its a dream really! They still have the scrunchy look and are just so easy to handle. I typically say before they are 2 weeks old is best, but the first week is ideal!!

Elena – 6 months old (Colorado Springs Portrait Photographer)

It’s not often I sit a baby down to photograph them and they are smiley and happy from the start! But I sure do love when that happens! I can always depend on Elena smiling for me, she’s got to be one of the happiest (and cutest!) babies I’ve photographed. Sure makes my life a lot easier!
